My travel across Africa has revealed to me that most successful African Entrepreneurs are not known and celebrated by Africans and in celebrating Africa to the world, I thought it wise ssssssto bring the unknown to limelight. I have taken it upon myself to celebrate and share with the world great African Entrepreneurs who are also in their own small way, changing the narrative of Africa. Next government must take review of our constitution seriously – Togbe Afede ByKwadwo Berimah Nhyira OCT 9, 2023 Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli, says any new political administration must seriously consider a review of the nation’s constitution. Ghana’s constitutional review was given the needed support during the late Professor Mills administration, and a committee tasked, produced a 900-page report, which had been shelved since his untimely demise. Togbe Afede, who was addressing the grand durbar of the 2023 Asogli Yam Festival, said the current Constitution had granted an overly biased scale of power, and thus deserved to be reviewed. The Agbogbomefia noted how the over-concentration of powers at the presidency affected the resolve to fight corruption. “Our 1992 Constitution is not helping the fight against corruption. It has given too much power to the president and until it is changed, we will not see the needed development. “I admonish that our next government, just like Attah Mills did, take the review of our Constitution seriously.” He spoke of weakening state institutions, including the security services and the judiciary, as constitutional powers continued to suffer abuse. Togbe Afede reiterated the call for unity, the leadership of the nation to eschew corruption, and place the interest of the people above self, to be able to transform their fortunes. “If Ghana is all we have, and we have to continue to shine as a bearer of peace, then we all must come together.” The Agbogbomefia, who is also marking two decades of reign this year, said he held fast to the two most important goals of his leadership; to bring development to the community, and to keep the state united. Togbe Afede noted that his leadership impacted the community, and said although not yet a major economic hub, the ongoing development attested to commendable progress. “We have tried so hard to bring development to Volta, and I am extremely proud at how far Ho has come,” he stated, and said stakeholders should address bad roads and others in the region. Togbe Afede said jobs for the youth remained a major area of focus and reassured of plans to establish a “Ghana Aviation Training Academy” in the coming months to help fill the needs. The festival was held on the theme: “20 Years of Selfless and Inspiring Leadership,” and Oseadeayor Agyeman Badu, the Dormaahene, who was special guest of honour, commended Togbe Afede for leading a new generation of outspoken traditional leaders. He appealed to all to continue to hold politicians accountable to ensure the nation’s resources benefited all and not just a few. Chiefs from the Asante Kingdom sent congratulatory messages from the Otumfuo to Togbe Afede, and said chiefs should emulate his stance, and speak out to help better society. Several dignitaries, including political leaders and diplomatic heads, wished Togbe Afede well on his anniversary. The grand durbar drew curtains on three weeks of a myriad of activities to mark the occasion, and notable among them were an anti-corruption day celebration, a summit of Ewe Chiefs from West Africa, and a women’s day celebration. A ban on funerals in the municipality throughout the period would be lifted the week after. GJA expresses disappointment with Oppong Nkrumah’s ‘wobbling’ condemnation of attack on UTV ByKwadwo Berimah Nhyira OCT 9, 2023 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed its utmost disappointment in a press statement issued by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on the invasion of UTV by alleged NPP members and sympathisers. According to the Association, the statement was wobbling and paled in the face of an earlier statement issued by the Minister when Dagbon FM was attacked by an NDC member. On Saturday, some men believed to be affiliated to the ruling New Patriotic Party stormed the premise of UTV and temporarily interrupted the United Showbiz show. They threatened to attack the host and her panel, accusing them of disparaging the ruling administration unfairly. Comparing both statements issued by the Minister, GJA noted the sharp contrast in tone and diction, suggesting that the Minister has not been even-handed in addressing the issues. “In the second paragraph of the press statement, the Minister tries to justify the barbaric attack by holding that the hooligans entered UTV “allegedly without authorization” when he was the very person who reported to, and called in, the Police; in the fourth paragraph, the Minister avoids direct condemnation of the hooligans and conveniently makes his condemnation general, and, worst of all, in the last paragraph, the Minister imposes a burden on the media to promote national cohesion, regardless of the incessant attacks against them. “The Minister’s press statement is in sharp contrast to another one issued by the PR Unit of his Ministry on May 4, 2023, in respect of the attack on a radio presenter on Dagbon FM in Tamale by a communicator of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). “The Ministry’s May 2023 press statement was very direct: the Ministry described the attack as ASSAULT without any “allegedly” clothing; the Ministry condemned the act, specifically without giving it general direction; the Ministry called for “severe and speedy response from law enforcement agencies” to avoid future recurrence; the Minister had a telephone conversation with victim of assault, and the Minister “offered the support of the Ministry if he will require any”. “Between the two cases – Dagbon FM and UTV, the Minister of Information and/or the Ministry of Information has or have not been even-handed in addressing the critical issues at stake, and we find that very worrying,” the GJA stated. The GJA called on the media “to be bold and never be intimidated by such acts of hooliganism, knowing that we serve the larger interest of the public. “We also wish to urge media practitioners and institutions to act professionally at all times in the discharge of their duties.” Meanwhile, GJA has urged the NPP to appropriately sanction the party members who had played a part in the invasion. “Inasmuch as we welcome the apology, we can only place value on its sanctity, and embrace it beyond rhetoric, if the party sanctions the perpetrators for doing something it did not sanction. “Indeed, the GJA cannot uphold the sanctity of the apology when spokespersons of the NPP, some connected to the communications directorate, had earlier instigated such hooliganism against the television station without being reprimanded,” the GJA stated. Earlier it had condemned and called for the arrest and prosecution of the NPP invaders. The Ghana international is yet to start a game in the Premier League but has been included in the starting lineup on two occasions, both in cup competitions. Kudus started against TSC Topola in West Ham’s opening game in the Europa League and scored twice on the evening at home but has been used from the bench in the Premier League games. Following his recent cameo in the win over Sheffield United, some Hammers fans have called for the 23-year-old to have a starting role in the team.
